Harvesting honey

What is harvesting honey?

When the bees have filled the brood chamber of the hive they move into the honey super and make honey pots to store their honey. In the spring and summer months this can be harvested. Harvesting the honey is the process of removing it from the honey super so that we can use it. There are various techniques that can be used which may change dependant on hive design.

How to harvest honey

Now for the good part! The bees have produced stores of honey in the honey super and it is time to harvest.

  1. Remove the honey super from the hive by taking off the tape from between the honey super and the upper brood layer of the hive and lifting the honey super off.

  2. Allow the bees a few minutes to leave the honey super before processing.

  3. Use a sharp device such as a skewer to pierce holes in the honey pots.

  4. Pore the honey into a large bowl covered by a cloth to stop any bees or debris from mixing with the honey.

  5. Wipe up any spilt honey that remains in the honey super before putting it back on the hive and taping it back in position.
